A sixth straight session of gains in semiconductor shares offset a selloff in banks, while Brent's slide to about $99 followed President Trump's account of a "very good" meeting with Iranian envoys in New York.
A renewed chipmaker rally lifted the Nasdaq 100 0.8% to its first record since June, with a gauge of semiconductor heavyweights including Micron Technology and Nvidia advancing for a sixth consecutive session and offsetting a selloff in bank shares.
Oil supplied the other side of the move. Brent settled around $99 after Trump said U.S. officials held a "very good" three-hour meeting with Iranian envoys in New York, describing the encounter as "very productive" and saying another meeting was being planned for the near future. Trump added there was "a lot of momentum" toward a deal with Iran as White House advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with mediators. The administration has signaled a renewed push to end the war in the Middle East, and Trump claimed in his speech that the conflict will conclude shortly after the November midterm elections.
News & analysis
Bonds stabilized as equities gained, and Wall Street is preparing for a summit this week between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, giving the leaders of the world's two largest economies an opportunity to strengthen personal ties and seek common ground on contentious issues.
The record close rests on a narrow base rather than a broad advance: chipmakers' strength offset weakness in bank shares, and the accompanying drop in crude depends on diplomatic progress that has not yet produced an agreement. That leaves two conditions on the move. A deal that pulls crude further below the session's level would reinforce the cost relief already supporting sentiment; if the talks stall or the war's end slips past November, that support fades and the index would lean again on a semiconductor rally now in its sixth consecutive session. The Trump-Xi summit is a second, separate test of whether the diplomatic backdrop that helped equities can hold.
